Benefits of yoga for preteens
Besides developing the physical (strength and flexibility) aspects, yoga helps this age group with:
Self- confidence - Yoga is an individual discipline that emphasis working were you are at the moment. So, kids build confidence knowing that they are not being judged and knowing that there is a physical activity they can do. (According the the Nat’l Institute for Child Health - 75% of kids drop out of organized sports before the age of 12. Some top reasons why they do: They feel they aren’t good enough to play, and they feel too much pressure or worry. There is no pressure in a yoga class.
Self- awareness - Through yoga preteens learn to control their mind instead of their mind controlling them. Developing self-awareness helps with anger management and peer image. By developing self-awareness, they learn to listen to their intuition, which can help them make the right choice in a given situation.
Self-respect - Yoga teaches the importance of non-violence towards the body and listening to the body. This evolves into a deep appreciation for the body, which leads to creating a healthy life-style to support the body.
Self-discipline - Learning from their own experiences, students discover the benefits of a regular yoga practice and come willingly on their own to the mat. This in-turn teaches them the reward of being committed to something.
Relaxation - Children of this age face much stress from “fitting-in,” hormonal imbalances, test anxiety, expectations of adolescence, and much more. Preteens can take the relaxation techniques they learn and apply it to all of the above areas. Yoga class is a place where it’s actually okay to fall asleep in the class!
The teacher: Denise Karson is a Kripalu certified teacher who for the last several years has been teaching students of all ages from four to eighty-five. She began her own journey with yoga, spirituality, meditation, and healthy living many years ago. She loves children and believes there is much we can learn from them.
**** According to the Yoga Research & Education Center, 85% of children who practice yoga regularly, will still be regular practitioners of yoga at age thirty, and 95% of thirty-year-olds practicing yoga will be practicing yoga at fifty. What a gift to give a child.****
